Life Is a Miracle

If there is anything that has convinced me that all life is a miracle, it has been our seven-year journey through infertility.

First, there was the charting of temperatures and peak fertility days. Then there was all the testing to confirm everything was working as it should (supposedly it was). Then there was medication to better our chances of getting pregnant. Then I changed my diet and exercise habits. Then I added acupuncture and Eastern medicinal teas. Then invasive procedures. Then more medication and procedures. Finally, the shots. So many shots.

Month after month, year after year, for seven years, nothing yielded a baby. The only thing that grew was my awareness of all of the things that could go wrong at any juncture along the road to pregnancy. Even with infertility treatments, I began to wonder how in the world anyone could get pregnant.

To me, the conclusion was simple: All life is a miracle.

King David devoted an entire psalm to this precious truth. In Psalm 139:14, he wrote to God, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

There have been times when I’ve wondered if my life was a mistake or if I mattered to God. There have also been days when parenting my two little ones (a most miraculous gift from God!) has left me frustrated beyond measure. There have been moments when I've questioned the worthiness of that one person who just rubs me the wrong way.

But here is the truth:

Where there is life, there is God’s hand delightedly forming the innermost being of every person.

Where there is life, there is God writing out the stories of our lives day by day, before even one of them comes to pass.

Where there is life, there is God’s tender care to know our every thought and word, even before we do.

Where there is life, there is the truth that even before the foundation of the world was laid, God chose His people to be the focus of His love: “Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes” (Ephesians 1:4, NLT).

Where there is life, there is God’s relentless pursuit of us to draw us near to Him as His beloved children through faith in His Son, Jesus.

On the days when I question my worthiness or struggle with frustration toward myself or others, all I need to do is remember the precious truths in Psalm 139. Even my experiences in those long, dark years of infertility remind me that every life — yours, mine, and all those around us — is a miracle intentionally brought forth by God.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the miracle of our lives and the lives all around us. May we believe and live out the truth that we are all fearfully and wonderfully made, with lives that matter. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
