Matt, about 25, whose father is a pastor and theology professor, has had enough church exposure to have a favorite Bible verse -- "Judge not lest you be judged". For over half an hour I listened as he described his beliefs, a mixture of Christian ethics and eastern mysticism. He countered my questions about God with long references to philosophical quotes or analogies, which I have edited out in the video to highlight the root of his rejection of Christianity -- his rejection of the right for anyone to judge him including God Himself. I explained to Matt how a God who judges right from wrong is foundational to an understanding of the Bible and Christianity. Without a God who judges as our final authority, we try to become the judge ourselves and even try to subject God to our own judgment. I think what is interesting in this ten-minute video is how Matt's demeanor changes once I subject him to a "good person test" based on the Ten Commandments. He goes from bold but vague statements about his own religious theories, to wanting to know more about this God he could possibly be accountable to.

This is for those who follow after righteousness and seek the Lord. Those who have the faith of Abraham that compels them to action and obedience to God. Isaiah saw that God was about to move and he is calling upon the people to prepare for the coming salvation of God! God is calling upon the Church to put on the strength of the Holy Spirit! To put on the beautiful garments of holiness which are granted through faith in Christ! God is calling upon the Church to shake itself from the dust and arise! To loose themselves from the bonds of their necks! God has made a way through the cross of Jesus Christ for every Christian to live a victorious life through faith! There is no reason for anyone to not fully embrace the provisions of the atonement! If people are living in bondage, defeat, and captivity it is because they have moved into that place themselves. It is God’s will for His people to walk in victory and freedom. Jesus Christ is our righteousness, sanctification, and redemption! But has He become these things to you? Is it personal? Have you personally entered in through faith?

When I first saw the title of this song I thought "what kind of title is '139'?" And I immediately thought of Psalms 139. Of course. And, indeed, the song is based on Psalms 139. The theme is the omniscience of our Creator. He knows our every way. He designed them. David writes in verse 14 "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made." Hallelujah!
